History of Bluffton, SC

DO NOT REQUIRE THIS FIELD

Bluffton was settled in 1825 as a summer retreat for wealthy upstate planters eager to escape the heat, mosquitoes and disease that was rampant among their home plantations. The town became a hot bed of secession meetings during the years preceding the Civil War, and consequently suffered decades of economic privation after the war's end. Bluffton began to experience a revitalization of commerce with the development of Hilton Head Island in the 1960's. Today, you can still experience the great determination to keep history alive. On any given day, you may attend a Lowcountry Civil War lecture series, or find a newly discovered photograph at the Heyward House. This antebellum home has been lovingly restored and now serves as a museum and Bluffton's official welcome center. From here, you can experience Old Bluffton, a mere one square mile in size, but loaded with an eclectic mix of art galleries, antique shops and boutiques, great restaurants, and plenty of southern charm.
